Riel Day Reflections

This past Monday was our fourth annual Riel Day event at Agape Table.  Over 500 guests and 60 volunteers from 7 different churches came together for a day filled with food, conversation, and fun.  There were a number of highly competitive Scrabble games, bouts of laughter, and meaningful conversations and experiences that took place throughout the day.

We're currently collecting stories from people who participated and we'll be adding them to the site over the next few days so be sure to check back.

THANK YOU so much to everyone who prayed, made a donation, or volunteered to help make this day such a success!

Practicing Gratitude

Question: When is the best time to discover that your sewer line is leaking?

Answer: BEFORE it gets into your house.

I’ve been told it’s important to be grateful for the little things. Today I am grateful for a little thing that could have become a BIG thing! This morning, as part of our on-going renovation project we discovered and repaired a leaky sewer line before it caused any damage to the inside of the house. Hallelujah!

So a huge “thank you” goes out to everyone who has helped to make this renovation project possible, and a doubly big thank you to the work crew who had to clean up the mess!

Now onto nicer things…

Last week I spoke at the MNO Young Adult Coffee House. I had no idea they were filming me but today I received this great short video of highlights from the evening you can check out.

I also wanted to remind everyone of our Annual General Meeting this coming Wednesday at 7:00 at 83 Henderson Hwy. Everyone is welcome to attend but please contact us so we know how many people to set up for.

Finally Riel Day is fast approaching and we’d appreciate your continued prayers as we prepare for this event. At last year’s event several guests commented on the unusually positive atmosphere in the space – we know this was the result of your prayers. THANK YOU!

It’s also not to late too volunteer to help out or to make a financial donation to help cover the costs. Contact us or check our Donate Page for more information.

I hope your weekend is filled with moments of gratitude. Have a great time and stay warm!

Prayers for our Third Floor

Recently I was looking at some photos of our community house with the folks at Renos by James. All of the sudden I realized that I was looking at a photo that I thought was taken this year but that MUST have been taken earlier because it depicted our old dangerous front walkway.

“When was that taken?” I asked.

Well, it turns out it was taken in January of last year when we first started to talk and dream about this project.

This has been a long process and there have been a lot of points along the way where we thought it might never happen. Who ever imagined it would take six months to get a permit, for example? At times it has seemed impossible but we’ve also been pleasantly surprised by God’s generosity along the way.

From helping us to find the best possible contractor right in our own neighbourhood (as part of our commitment to this neighbourhood we place a high value on supporting local businesses), to the overwhelming generosity of people who have made donations to cover the costs (we’re very close, only about $10,000 is still needed), to the people God is already preparing to move into that space (maybe it’s you? Let’s talk!), the whole process has been a lesson in both patience, as we lean into God’s timing, and joy as we learn about God’s generous abundance.

Last night was another wonderful piece of this continuing story – as part of our regular potluck and prayer time we braved the cold and headed upstairs to make our mark by covering the wood framing of each room with prayers, blessings, and artwork. We also had the opportunity to sing two of our favourite songs together in that space – “Happy Birthday” and “Praise God From Whom all Blessing Flow.”

And it sounded wonderful.

We all appreciate your prayers, financial support, and willingness to volunteer to help us complete this project. We know we couldn’t do this without your support!

And if you’re feeling a particular tug to explore what it’s like to do life in the context of Christian community, we may just have a beautifully blessed new bedroom just for you!
